Erasure of “The First Three Circles of Hell”

Christine Guarano

Artist books are unconventional. In making an artist book, the artist elevates destruction to the level of art. In "The First Three Circles of Hell," I burned, ripped and painted Dante's work until it became my own. The artist book came out of a class on the relationship of image and text, and the concept for the piece developed while walking home from DJ Ernst Booksellers.

Christine Guaragno '16 is a poet from Pennsylvania. This is her first experience with erasure.
