2009

  • Dear Readers:

Sanctuary was born out of a need for creative space that welcomed all genres, all intelligent ideas, and all forms of expression. Working on this magazine has been an enjoyable and challenging experience. This year’s editors and shadows (our editors-in-training) had specific goals for the 2009 edition. We dedicated ourselves to raising the bar in terms of professionalism, expanding our readership, increasing awareness that there is a place for genre writing at Susquehanna, and increasing the variety of literature and art published in Sanctuary.

Originally, Sanctuary was created as a haven for all “speculative” writing. But when it comes down to it, all writing is, in essence, speculative. It all explores the deeper sides of human nature, exposes truths, challenges stereotypes, and pushes the boundaries of literature in order to make all of us better writers and readers. Now, Sanctuary serves as a refuge, a safe harbor, for anything alternative genre.

This year, we have had the pleasure of accepting leading examples of creative speculative non-fiction, fantasy, horror, humor, self-explorative poetry, and a speculative screenplay. Additionally, we are proud to feature an excerpt from a young adult fantasy manuscript, written by a Susquehanna alumna, as well as four conceptual art pieces from a Susquehanna graphic design major.

As many of our readers know, the first step off the beaten path or into unknown territory is often the most daunting. We thank you for picking up a copy of Sanctuary and hope that you enjoy the pieces selected for your intellectual and emotional contentment.

    Best regards,

Will Conway and Claire M. Reilly

  • Dear Readers,

This year we were granted a great opportunity to see how a literary magazine works. Neither one of us thought that as freshmen we would have been able to assume the roles of shadows/editor-in-training to any magazine on campus. We are very grateful for the opportunities that have been allotted to us by the Dragonlord and Wolfqueen.

Along with the editors, we are happy/proud/enthused to be presenting all different kinds of work by Susquehanna University students present and past, written and photographed. The works are what some would call “out-of-the-box,” something that is not necessarily welcomed with open arms. But we have all persevered, in particular our editors, to bring you this magazine, because there is a need for something of this nature on campus.

    Your faithful shadows,

    Madeleine Abrams and Sarah Wisneiski
